“Korakuen” in Okayama Prefecture is one of the three most famous gardens in Japan with “Kenrokuen” in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and “Kairakuen” in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture.

It is also a garden designated as a “special scenic spot”, given to those with excellent value, landscape and atmosphere. This “scenic spot”, designated by the Cultural Property Conservation Law, means it is a place with good scenery.

Currently, there are only about 30 special scenic spots across Japan; and not only Kenrokuen and Kairakuen, but also Matsushima, Mt. Fuji, Kamikochi, Kurobe Gorge, Ryoanji Temple Rock Garden, Amanohashidate, Itsukushima, and other representative tourist spots in Japan. The land is carefully selected. Korakuen is a spot on par with them.

Korakuen

Korakuen history

Korakuen was made about 300 years ago by Tsunamasa Ikeda, the second lord of the Okayama domain; and was open to the common people during the Edo period. Although it was burnt down by the Pacific War, it was faithfully restored based on materials from the Edo period, and is still popular as a place for Okayama residents to relax.

The highlight of Korakuen

Korakuen Enyotei

There are many historically valuable buildings in the park. One example is Enyotei, which was used as a living room when the lord visited Korakuen. Enyotei’s garden is designed for the most beautiful view from the main room where the lord is sitting to entertain.

By using the best materials and first-class technology prepared at that time, the beauty that is the same as at the time of the embankment was beautifully reproduced.

Koto concerts are held during the moon-viewing and New Year holidays, so you can spend your time in the perfect atmosphere.

In addition, there are several teahouses in Korakuen, where you can enjoy delicious Japanese sweets including kibi-dango and matcha. It’s a must-visit spot when you stop by Korakuen, because you can enjoy the atmosphere of a Japanese garden.
